The Breeders Cup Juvenile

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Produces Great Racers

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is a thoroughbred horse race for two year old colts and geldings. It is held annually in early November, on a race track either in the United States or Canada. The racecourse is always a dirt track, and the distance just over a mile.

Many famous horses have gone on from winning the Juvenile race to win more prestigious races, like the Preakness Stakes or the Kentucky Derby, often affording a preview of the stars of the Triple Crown races for the following year. The Breeders Cup Juvenile is the richest race for two year olds in the whole of North America. Prize money awarded to the winner of this race is a huge two million dollars.

The Trophy Modelled On a Drawing by Da Vinci

The Breeders’ Cup Trophy is a reproduction of the original horse that was created in Florence by Giovanni da Bologna in the late 1580s. The sculpture is beautifully done, showing all the muscles of the horse in accurate detail. The original purpose of the sculpture of the horse is not known, although some people think it may have been made as a study for the equestrian statue of Duke Cosimo 1 of Florence, cast in 1591. It clearly shows the influence of Leonardo da Vinci, and there is a resemblance to several drawings made by da Vinci.

The original bronze horse sculpture is in the museum of Fine Arts at the University of Edinburgh. The Breeders’ Cup Trophy was cast in bronze, from the original, and for the exclusive use of the Breeders’ Cup Limited. The largest version of the trophy is permanently owned by the Breeders’ Cup, and displayed at the official host track. Each one of the Breeders’ Cup Championships races, like the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, is presented with a replica of the original sculpture every year.

The 31st Championships were held at the Santa Anita racecourse for the third consecutive year, and there was a record crowd of nearly one hundred thousand. In 2015 the Breeders’ Cup was held in Keeneland, will then return to Santa Anita for the ninth time in 2016, and then will be run for the first time at Del Mar in 2017.
