The Breeders Cup Part of the ‘Grand Slam’

The Breeders Cup in North America is the richest two days in any global sports event. There is huge prize money paid out in purses and awards over the weekend. The total amount of 26 million dollars is paid out over the weekend of racing. Winnings are paid to owners, stallion nominators and foal nominators. Owners share their winnings with their trainer and jockey on their own terms.

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade 1 Thoroughbred horse races, operated by the Breeders’ Cup Limited, a company started in 1982. At the beginning it was a one day event, but expanded to two days in 2007. All the racing sites have been in the United States, except in 1996, when the races were held in Canada.

The Breeders Cup forms part of racing’s “grand slam”, the other races being the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. The 2015 edition of the Breeders Cup posted the highest television rating in twenty years, as the horse American Pharaoh became the first horse to win every one of those famous horse races. The number of viewers averaged nearly four million.

The 2015 Edition of the Race Broke All Previous Records

The last edition of this important horse race was run in Lexington, Kentucky, North America at the beginning of November, 2015 at the Keeneland Race Course. The people who watched the event in person at the racecourse numbered more than fifty thousand, which was also a course record.

Some had voiced doubts about the size of the Keeneland’s racecourse, but it easily accommodated the record breaking number of visitors from around the world who attended the two days of racing. This year’s Championships ranks at the highest level of international competition.

The Breeders’ Cup championships comprises thirteen different races. This year there were 161 horses participating, including 25 horses from other countries.  Seven of the races produced the full complement of fourteen horses.

The next edition of the Breeders Cup World Championships, in 2016, will be held on Friday and Saturday 4 and 5 November, at Santa Anita Park, in Arcadia, California.
